Star Surge
|
The project was made to fit a star theme for a game jam. The original idea was to make a person a super star, like an actor. But I changed it due to time constraints. I created the idea of a star gathering other stars when I saw an old school project where we made a character grow and shrink from an actor, this is what made star surge.
What I wanted was to make the main pawn (the star) to get much bigger as you collect stars, but I found that the background ends up looking bad, and the other already spawned actors would just add to it as soon as it grew too big, so the sized was toned down from 1.5 times per star to 1.01 time as star. The project generated a box that randomly generates the pickups in them, this was frustration because it didn’t work properly, what happened is that at first, I never made the original ones delete for new ones to me made, but if I made a delete node all around the original spawner then I’d be deleting the spawners before getting to it. Also when I spawned a new spawner all the pickups went to the main character, this was because I had it set on overlap for the entire scene, not the pickups themselves. What did I learn from this, well functions are really useful, and save a lot of copying and pasting. The second thing I learned is how helpful arrays are at finding and making spawn points, before I had it spawn the pickup spawner at each arrow individually, but when I set only one actor spawn with an array of the transforms it worked much better. Things I would do better next time would be performance. The framerate chugged before I exported the build of the game which makes the game feel really slow now. Also I would add power ups, and balance the hp when pickups are taken, or would make the character go one direction will influence on the movement to only spawn the pickup spawner one way and not 3 ways. you can find this at itch.io at : https://zetashazad.itch.io/star-surge |
